What BestPlaces Users Say about Galax
Galax, Virginia is a small town located in the southwestern part of the state. It is known for its strong bluegrass music scene and hosts an annual Old Fiddlers' Convention. With a population of around 6,500, Galax offers a quieter, more rural way of life. However, like many small towns, it has its own unique characteristics and challenges. Here's what people have to say about living in Galax, based on user reviews on BestPlaces.net.
User Reviews:
- "I have been living in Galax for the past 10 years and it has been a great experience. The community is very close-knit and welcoming. It's a great place to raise a family and the cost of living is affordable." - Sarah D.
- "Galax is a charming little town with a lot of character. The downtown area is full of quaint shops and restaurants. The people are friendly and there's always something fun going on, like the annual fiddlers' convention." - John R.
- "I moved to Galax recently and I have to say, I'm not a big fan. The job market is limited and the cost of living is higher than I expected. It's also very rural, so if you're used to living in a bigger city, it can be a bit of an adjustment." - Emily B.
- "I grew up in Galax and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. It's a small town, but there's so much to do outdoors. It's also a great place to raise kids because of the strong sense of community. The only downside is the lack of job opportunities." - Michael G.
Overall, it seems that people have mixed opinions about living in Galax. While some enjoy the community and small-town feel, others mention the limited job market and higher cost of living. However, many agree that Galax is a great place to settle down and raise a family, with a strong sense of community and plenty of outdoor activities.

After retiring with a nice pension but in a place that is one of the most expensive in the nation I unfortunately discovered Galax VA. Admittedly housing and taxes are cheap here. BUT, living in a new place is not all housing and taxes. The people here are not friendly. Nearby is a nationally famous VFW. As a vet. I went to a couple of their meetings and events. No one spoke to me. No one even greeted me. As a life time unionist the name of the city park really burns my buns, Felts Park. The Felts were not friends of unionists. In fact they were well know thugs that that would do anything anyone told them to do if they were paid... throw a widon out of her home the day after her husband died in a mining accident... No problem. The Roanoke newspaper has a good article about them. Had a guy approach me an a lady I was talking to in Wallyworld. Both of us were wearing Union clothing. Me a T Shirt and her a jacket. He told the two of us his "Daddy" used to say that when he saw a union
