It's republican-Hill-Billy central

I grew up in Elgin. I left there right after high school. I would not recommend anyone living there. The majority of people living there are hypocritical-hate-filled-bigots. If you are not white, straight, republican, and religious you will not enjoy this place. People are nice to you to your face then they trash you behind your back. It's like the whole town is a high school. If you like your privacy, live somewhere else. Everyone will know your business, before you even know it yourself. There are very few forward thinking people here. It's republican-Hill-Billy central. The area is beautiful but that doesn't cancel out the fact that you will be ridiculed non-stop for being "different." Steer Clear not only of Elgin but also of all of Union County and most of Eastern Oregon.

Over the last 25 years we have lived in E. Oregon; Union, LaGrande, Enterprise & Sumpter. The countryside has beautiful mountains, and lots of nice farm country. Some rural areas are pretty red-neck, but that is way better than the W. side of Oregon....If you like small town USA E. Oregon is awesome. Yes many people are conservative, but that is the way we like it over here! We all have choices, so don't live here, or in Idaho if you do not like those values.
